On Friday 23rd January 2015 we held our annual ‘Big EU Debate’ with the proposition ‘This house believes that the UK should exit the European Union’. In opposition we had the honour of welcoming Peter Wilding (director of British Influence) and Anthea Mcintyre (Conservative MEP) whilst for the proposition we enjoyed the company of Chris Shaw (Conservative future area chairman) and a brave stand-in Warwick student who filled in at the last minute after Mike Nattrass failed to turn up. Despite the setback of being a speaker down, the proposition raised some important early points which shaped the debate’s agenda. Questions of history, sovereignty, expense, and world standing dominated the speeches from the panel before a Q&A from the floor raised the issue of problematic fiscal unions and the Greece dilemma. In the end the proposition was comprehensively rejected with a show of hands from the room, before we broke off for pizza and informal discussion which allowed everyone to mull over the finer details of the age-old question. A success once more and sure to be back next year!
